What causes Thread Veins?

Women are more likely to be affected by face veins due to higher oestrogen levels, which are often escalated when on the Pill, undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or simply handling the changes of hormone production through lifestyle changes. This is because these hormones can cause the walls of the veins to relax, reducing the strength of both the veins and their valves, allowing the build-up of blood to quickly increase.
Pregnancy can also make women more susceptible to thread veins, as the increased blood pressure, combined with the change in hormones, often leads to a greater pressure being placed on the veins. For the same reason, obesity can also lead to an increased likelihood of spider veins developing.
Jobs that require standing or sitting for long periods of time are also linked to a higher risk of developing thread veins. This is due to the decreased levels of blood flow caused by remaining in one position for long periods of time.
Environmentally, excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute towards the appearance of spider veins on the face, as this can put an increased amount of pressure on the circulation system. Age is also a major contributor to face veins, as the body naturally loses elasticity over time, and the valves located in the veins are less likely to work to their full capacity.
